In the Chancellor’s budget speech yesterday (3rd March 2021) it was announced that Cornwall was not designated a Priority 1 area, one of those areas most in need of funding under the government’s ‘levelling up’ agenda, but was given Priority 2 status.
Lib Dems on Cornwall Council have slammed Cornish Conservative MPs for not ensuring that Cornwall receives its fair share of this funding whilst many areas of the North of England have.
Lib Dem Deputy Leader of Cornwall Council, Adam Paynter said:
“I’m deeply saddened and frustrated that Cornwall has been left behind and is not getting its fair share of ‘levelling up’ funding from the Government. Cornish Conservative MPs have badly let Cornwall down – why did they not fight for Cornish communities?
“Many areas in the North of England have been given Priority 1 status and funding, but once again, Cornwall’s Tory MPs have not been able to stand up to their London paymasters to help the people of Cornwall.
“This is a further disappointment following delays to the ‘Shared Prosperity Fund’ which was supposed to replace EU funding. The Prime Minister has said on a number of occasions that Cornwall will get it a designated pot of funding at least, at the level of funds which would have come from the EU, but another Tory U-Turn has seen Cornwall miss out again.”
