All local polls including parish and town by-elections and local neighbourhood plan referenda scheduled to take place before May 7th have been suspended until further notice, including those already underway, such as the Cornwall Council by-election in the St Mewan Division.
New national guidance released to Returning Officers stated that it would be both reasonable and consistent with the national position for polls to be suspended. Ongoing elections will now take place on a date to be announced.
Adam Paynter, deputy leader at Cornwall Council said:
“Our primary concern at Cornwall Council is to keep the public safe. Whilst it is naturally disappointing that polls are being suspended, Liberal Democrats believe this is the right thing to do in the current circumstance and support Cornwall’s Returning Officer in this decision.
“However, democracy is the cornerstone of our society. We will therefore be monitoring the position carefully and urging the government to allow the resumption of elections just as soon as it is safe to do so.”
