Cornwall Council's The Family Hub have been leasing two rooms at Liskerrett since 2017. They have used the rooms as additional space to run their services and have also allowed other organisations that are providing services for young people and families to use them at no additional charge.
This has included for the youth provision in Liskeard run by Young People Cornwall.
The Liskerrett centre has received notification from Cornwall Council that they are terminating the arrangement with Liskerrett from 1st October. This is on the basis that the space is not being used enough to justify the costs involved.
Liskerrett are looking at options of how best to manage that space. However they do not want to jeopardise the future of the youth club. Whilst Young people Cornwall already pay for the games room and the music practice space on a sessional basis, they would struggle to pay for the cafe room too and the high number of young people attending justifies the extra space.
The financial benefit of the services provided to young people in Liskeard far outweigh the tiny saving that Cornwall council is making by removing this provision.
The centre feeds and nurtures up to 50 young per Friday, it is also the quieter area of their provision where they are able to offer 1 to 1 support, and also the area where their SEN young people with additional needs have a place to feel safety and sanctuary from the busier areas of provision. It is also the area where they hold most of their important conversations/social education and enrichment activities with the young people. The shape of the service provided would change massively and numbers of young people they are currently able to reach would plummet.
Please support the youth club by signing this petition which will be sent to Cornwall council
We will include your name and, address when submitting the petition to the Council.
