Lib Dem leader launches Cornwall Council campaign with 1,000 homes to rent pledge

Lib Dem leader launches Cornwall Council campaign with 1,000 homes to rent pledge.

Leader of the Liberal Democrats Tim Farron MP visited Cornwall today (Thursday) to launch the Lib Dem campaign for the Cornwall Council elections on May 4th. Visiting candidates and supporters in Penzance, Mullion, Camborne and Newquay, Mr Farron highlighted the desperate need for good quality homes to rent and buy, at costs that are fair and realistic for local people.

Cornwall Liberal Democrats are promising that if elected to power on Cornwall Council in May, they will commit to ensuring the building of 1,000 homes at fair rents for local people during their term of office to 2021. Visiting a pilot site in Tolvaddon, Camborne with Cllr Joyce Duffin, Portfolio Holder for Housing on Cornwall Council today, Mr Farron said:

"Far too many young people and families are unable to find a good quality home in Cornwall at a cost they can afford, either renting or buying. The Lib Dems on Cornwall Council have been supporting the building of affordable homes to buy, but they now have an ambitious plan to go further, to help meet the needs of those who cannot afford to buy but need somewhere to rent at a fair price.”

"The Conservative and Labour Governments sold off our council housing and left us with a declining number of rental homes for local families. Liberal Democrats in Government secured investment in fair rented homes, meaning that the number is again rising, but this could be at risk as Tories want to sell off housing association homes.” Said Mr Farron.

Cllr Joyce Duffin said “Our plan will bring together Cornwall Council and other partners, to increase the number of homes available at fair rents. In addition we are committed to delivering a range of good quality new housing options for local people, that will be environmentally efficient and low cost to run.”

Meeting local candidates and supporters, Mr Farron said:

"Only the Liberal Democrats will stand up for Cornwall. Since 2013 Cornwall Council has had a £194m funding shortfall from the Conservative Government. In spite of this, the Liberal Democrats on Cornwall Council have: protected the most vulnerable by increasing the social care budget; introduced a living wage for council employees; and kept our libraries, leisure centres and public toilets open.

Only the Lib Dems can beat the Tories in May. If we do this, we will ensure 1,000 homes for local people at a fair rent are built, extend fair pay by ensuring all workers delivering council contracts receive the living wage, and protect social care, by standing up to the Tory government for proper funding of Cornwall’s health and social care system.

Cornwall’s Conservative MPs have been spineless in standing up to their friends in Westminster. Cornwall needs a strong voice to fight for it and that can only come from the Liberal Democrats.”
