Lib Dems on Cornwall Council lobby Government for leisure centre funding

Liberal Democrat Councillors in Cornwall are becoming increasingly frustrated by the Government's refusal to give financial support to offer the leisure centres in Cornwall a more secure future.

This week has seen protests across Cornwall about leisure centres remaining closed. Although the national Tory Government has provided Covid related funds to leisure centres elsewhere, Cornwall has been refused funding.

St Austell Councillor Malcolm Brown says

"I find it disgraceful that the Government are giving money to councils and leisure centres elsewhere in the country but, because Greenwich Leisure are a not for profit company, they refuse to fund them in Cornwall. Cornwall's Conservative MPs have been no help to the council at all. If they wanted to put pressure on Government ministers they could have done easily. At Cornwall Council we have been trying to do what we can but there are limits to what we can afford.

“Some of our leisure centres have not been able to reopen and residents there are running out of patience. The Government talk a lot about promoting healthy lifestyles and fitness. Steve Double was pictured recently outside or leisure centre in St Austell. I am confident that it's run well and I hope that, now that he has seen it, he will start to take some action".
