Liberal Democrats on Cornwall Council have strongly welcomed the government U-turn which will mean pupils in Cornwall will continue to receive free school meals vouchers over the summer.
Despite being opposed by Tory cabinet members the government were finally shamed into a U-turn through the intervention of Premier League footballer Marcus Rashford.
Welcome though the U-turn is, it does not go far enough.
Responding to the Prime Minister’s U-turn on free school meals, Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Layla Moran said:
"Too many vulnerable children face falling through the cracks. I am grateful to Marcus Rashford and all those campaigners who have helped force the Prime Minister to rediscover his conscience, but it should never have been needed.
"The Government must now work cross-party and with parents, teachers and local governments to do more. We must ensure no child is left behind.
"That starts with Liberal Democrat proposals to combine the free school meals voucher scheme with an emergency uplift in child benefit and a ‘catch-up premium’ to ensure every child has the best start in life.”
Pat Rogerson, Lib Dem Chair of Children and Families Overview and Scrutiny Committee at Cornwall Council said:
“Liberal Democrats on Cornwall Council strongly welcome this U-turn from the government. We also lobbied for this as we did before Easter when the government again did a welcome U-turn. It is a pity that were forced into action through shame rather than the welfare of children or even good governance, but a result is a result, as they say in football.”
