Lib Dems on Cornwall Council Slam Tory Government’s Failed Care Home PPE Scheme

Liberal Democrats have slammed the Tory Government’s failure to provide care home PPE at today’s online full council meeting.

On 27th May On 27th May the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities, and Local Government, Robert Jenrick told the BBC that “The Government’s CLIPPER scheme [an Ebay-style delivery system to supply personal protective equipment to care homes] was being piloted in Cornwall - and, it was a great success!”

The badly managed Clipper scheme had not been a success.  It had been a failure. Our Prime minister has said deaths in Care Homes are down to staff not following correct procedures, but to follow correct procedure you need the correct equipment.

Dulcie Tudor, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Threemilestone and Gloweth, worked with Lib Dem Cabinet member Rob Rotchell at today’s online full council meeting to highlight the issue.

Rob Rotchell has been fighting for better PPE provision in Cornwall during the Covid crisis, and agreed with Cllr Tudor that the Secretary of State was contemptuous in claiming that the Clipper scheme in Cornwall had been a success.

Rob Rotchell, Lib Dem Cabinet member for Adults at Cornwall Council added:

“This shows just how out of touch Boris Johnson ministers, and spin doctors in London are with the situation on the ground in Cornwall. Our care workers are the backbone of our Covid-19 response and haven’t been provided with the PPE they need to keep elderly and vulnerable care home residents safe. Now the Prime Minister is blaming frontline care workers for his failings.

“It’s scandalous that the Minister for Communities who is responsible for the badly managed and failed Clipper scheme is claiming credit. The fact is that Tory Government failure on PPE has led to unnecessary deaths in Cornwall.”
